Anonymous Source Sheds Light on Budget Shortfall

Unveiling the Truth Behind East Brunswick’s Budget Discrepancies

In a significant revelation, an anonymous source has provided information raising severe concerns about the transparency of the East Brunswick School District’s financial management. The recent $12 million budget shortfall led to the layoff of 51 staff members and cuts to crucial programs, prompting questions about the administration’s budget handling.

Health Benefits Increase: An Unexplained Reduction

At the May 9th Board of Education (EBBOE) meeting, there was a noticeable change in the reported increase in health benefits costs. On April 25, 2024, Assistant Superintendent Bernardo Giuliana reported an 11% increase in health benefits, totaling $3,275,010. This increase was set to generate a 3.76% tax hike, adding to the community’s financial strain. However, by the May 9th meeting, this increase was reduced to $970,009—a difference of $2,305,001. Despite this significant adjustment, the overall budget remained unchanged at $197,629,425.

Assistant Superintendent’s Explanation

Assistant Superintendent Bernardo Giuliana explained that the chart shows the rate change from one fiscal year to the next. However, for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, a one-time appropriations reduction of $1.1 million was applied as a business decision, which widened the gap between the two years. He mentioned that this was addressed in one of the budget presentations.

Legislative Aid: A Glimmer of Hope

In response to the financial turmoil faced by districts across the state, Governor Murphy signed legislation on May 14, 2024 establishing the Stabilized School Budget Aid Grant Program, allocating $44.7 million to provide grants equal to 45% of a school district’s state aid reduction for the 2024-2025 school year. For East Brunswick, this equates to $594,164 in returned aid.

Seeking Solutions and Accountability

Efforts are underway to discuss how this returned aid can be utilized to mitigate the impact on programs and provide relief to the East Brunswick Education Association for the job losses incurred. These funds must be used effectively to address the critical gaps left by the budget cuts and support those most affected.

A Call to Action

The recent events underscore a pressing need for greater transparency and accountability in the district’s financial management. The community deserves a clear understanding of how budgetary decisions are made and how public funds are allocated. The unexplained changes and the administration’s response to these matters are crucial areas of concern.

As the community continues to seek answers and clarity, the administration must address these discrepancies and work collaboratively to ensure the judicious and transparent use of funds. The East Brunswick community deserves better oversight and transparency in managing its educational resources.
