East Brunswick High School athletics · Sunday, Sept. 20 – Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026

The week produced eleven varsity results, and the Bears came out of them with six wins, four losses and a tie.

Field hockey scored eight at Monroe behind a four-goal afternoon from Logan Hooper, then conceded its first goal of the season and won anyway, and is 7-0. Girls tennis played ten flights and won all ten, and Kellyanne Mossi’s season line now reads 108 games won and one lost. Boys soccer kept its first clean sheet of the year and is unbeaten in four. Gymnastics came within 1.2 points of unbeaten South Plainfield, and football beat Voorhees 34-7.

Here’s how it went, sport by sport.

Field Hockey: Seven and Oh, and Logan Hooper’s Four-Goal Afternoon

Danielle Bradley’s team won twice more this week and is 7-0, 5-0 in the GMC Red.

Tuesday at Monroe was the week’s biggest scoring afternoon for any East Brunswick team. Logan Hooper scored four goals — one in each of the first two quarters and two more in the third — and East Brunswick won 8-0. Madelaina Whyte scored twice in the fourth quarter, one of them set up by Rachel Gerould, who also scored herself. Alexa DeRado added a goal and Carissa Kovarcik assisted one of Hooper’s. Monroe’s goalkeeper made sixteen saves and still conceded eight. At the other end, Reagan Umbach saved all three shots she faced.

Thursday brought something new. Montgomery scored in the third quarter — the first goal anyone has scored against East Brunswick this season, in the seventh game. The Bears already led 2-0 by then, on a goal from Hooper and another from Gerould off Hooper’s assist, and they answered before the quarter was out: Jolie Salamon scored from Gerould’s pass to make it 3-1. Umbach saved six of the seven shots Montgomery put on target.

The season line is extraordinary. Seven games, seven wins, 33 goals scored and one allowed, with six shutouts. Umbach has saved 15 of the 16 shots on goal she has faced all year.

Gerould has ten goals and four assists. Hooper has nine goals and four assists, and has scored in six of the seven games.

Metuchen visits on Sept. 29.

Girls Tennis: Ten and Oh, Ten Flights for Ten

Cory Widmaier’s team is 10-0, 6-0 in the GMC Red, and this week it did not lose a single flight. East Brunswick won all ten it played.

Wednesday at Wardlaw-Hartridge ended 5-0. Arya Joshi won 6-0, 6-2 at first singles, Aiona Cheng won 6-2, 6-0 at second, Kaitlin Wang and Prisha Patel took first doubles 6-4, 6-1, and Andrea Baraian and Kelsey Zhao won second doubles 6-1, 6-0.

Thursday against Edison the lineup moved around, and the result did not. Cheng stepped up to first singles and won 6-0, 6-3. Wang played third singles and won 6-0, 6-0. Baraian partnered Patel at first doubles and won 6-2, 6-0, and Diya Gurunath and her partner won second doubles 6-0, 6-2. It was East Brunswick’s second 5-0 win over Edison this season.

And then there is Kellyanne Mossi again.

Mossi won both her matches 6-0, 6-0 — at third singles on Wednesday and second singles on Thursday. Over nine matches this season she has won all eighteen sets she has played and 108 games while losing one. Eight of the nine have finished 6-0, 6-0.

Wang and Patel are now 9-0 together at first doubles, and across the season East Brunswick has won 45 of the 50 flights it has played.

J.P. Stevens visits on Sept. 29.

Boys Soccer: Unbeaten in Four

Terry McKibbin’s side won one and tied one this week and is 4-3-1, 3-1-1 in the GMC Red. It has not lost since Sept. 10.

Tuesday against Old Bridge, a scoreless first half gave way to two East Brunswick goals in the second and a 2-0 win. Kareem Amer and Quentin Taha scored, and Liam Kim and Ryan Dela Cruz each supplied an assist. Joshua Matthews made seven saves — and stopped every shot Old Bridge put on target — for the team’s first clean sheet of the season. East Brunswick put thirteen shots on goal; Old Bridge’s goalkeeper saved eleven of them.

Thursday at South Brunswick needed overtime. South Brunswick scored in the 45th minute, and Kyrillos Michael equalized in the 57th, set up by Taha. Neither side scored again, through regulation or overtime, and it finished level at 1-1. That is four goals in four games for Michael.

Taha scored one and set up one across the two games.

Gymnastics: 1.2 Points From South Plainfield

Allyson McMahon’s team hosted unbeaten South Plainfield on Thursday and lost 100.65 to 99.45 — a margin of 1.2 points, and a much closer meet than last week’s at Old Bridge. East Brunswick is 1-2.

Isabella Wasserman scored 9.05 on floor, tied for the best floor score of the meet, and finished with a 32.85 all-around, third in the meet. Alexandra Cooperman posted the second-best scores of the meet on both vault (8.65) and beam (8.45), with a 32.45 all-around. Eleanor Kim’s 7.9 on bars was second only to South Plainfield’s Samantha Riccardo, and she vaulted 8.6. Caroline Surabian scored 8.8 on floor and 7.75 on bars, Ellah Levi scored 8.0 on beam and 8.4 on vault, and Grace McVicar added 8.35 on vault, 8.2 on floor and 7.6 on bars.

Beam was East Brunswick’s rotation: with the top three scores counting, the Bears outscored South Plainfield on beam, 24.45 to 24.4.

The Bears are at South Brunswick on Oct. 1.

Girls Volleyball: Out-Hitting Ridge, Out-Blocking Woodbridge

Andrew Chup’s team lost both its matches and is 0-10, but both box scores hold real bright spots.

Wednesday against Ridge, East Brunswick recorded 21 kills to Ridge’s 13 and lost the second set by two points, 26-24, after dropping the first 25-19. Smitha Srinivasan had seven kills — tied for the most in the match — and seven digs. Zoe Holeman set up sixteen assists, more than anyone on the floor, and added five digs. Danielle Manning hit six kills and Eva Munoz dug eight balls.

Thursday at Woodbridge, the Bears out-blocked Woodbridge 8-0 and out-hit them 14 kills to 11, but lost 25-13, 25-17 to a team that served fourteen aces. Addyson Danchak had three blocks, Srinivasan had five kills — the most in the match — plus two blocks and six digs, and Ava Catanho added two blocks. Holeman set up twelve assists and Isabella Villatoro served two aces.

Across the two matches Srinivasan totaled twelve kills and thirteen digs, and Holeman set up 28 assists. Monroe visits on Sept. 28.

Football: A 34-7 Win Over Voorhees

Zack Gega’s team beat Voorhees 34-7 at home on Friday and is back above .500 at 3-2.

The defense’s day shows up in Voorhees’ own numbers: Voorhees ran for 43 yards all game, and East Brunswick intercepted a pass.

East Brunswick is at Edison on Oct. 2.

Girls Soccer: A Late Goal at Sayreville

Kevin Brady’s team lost 2-1 at Sayreville on Tuesday evening. Sayreville scored twice in the first half. Samantha Baker pulled one back in the second — her third goal in two games — and East Brunswick put thirteen shots on target; Sayreville’s goalkeeper saved twelve of them. The Bears are 2-6 and go to Woodbridge on Sept. 29.
