Eyes on EB, a vibrant collective of passionate bloggers, dives into the escalating tensions within the East Brunswick community as the local Facebook group “Take Back Our Schools” approaches a significant membership milestone of 1,000. With four pivotal Board of Education seats up for grabs this November, this group is determined to catalyze change and promote candidates who prioritize the district’s needs over personal gains.

Communication Breakdown: The Tipping Point

Recent events have intensified the group’s mission. A notable lack of effective communication from the East Brunswick School District and its Board has triggered widespread discontent. This dissatisfaction reached a “tipping point” following a series of questionable decisions and a perceived opacity in handling district affairs, propelling “Take Back Our Schools” into the spotlight.

The Financial Strain and Its Fallout

The backdrop to this discontent is a substantial budget crisis within the school district. The district faces a daunting $7.8 million budget gap, leading to the announcement of 51 staff cuts, including 15 teaching positions. It should be noted that some of these positions have been saved as a result of new legislation and the union. Superintendent Victor Valeski has publicly stated the inevitability of these cuts given the financial constraints. This has only fueled the groupโ€™s urgency for administrative changes, citing a need for smarter financial management and transparent leadership.

Supporting Dr. Louis Figueroa and All Affected by Budget Cuts

Despite his significant impact and the strong community support, Dr. Louis Figueroa, a cherished member of our East Brunswick community, has lost his job due to recent budget cuts. Dr. Lou was instrumental in overseeing crucial student services such as counseling, special education, and anti-bullying programs. His dedication extended beyond his professional roles; he was also a volunteer coach and the only administrator living in East Brunswick.

The loss of Dr. Lou, while profoundly impactful, is part of a broader issue affecting many dedicated personnel within our school system. These cuts have deeply affected not only the individuals directly involved but also the students and families who rely on these essential services.

As we move forward, it is important for the community to recognize the collective loss we face and to continue advocating for the prioritization of funding towards roles that directly impact student welfare. Together, we can strive to ensure that our education system reflects the true needs and values of our community.

Stay Focused, Stay Determined

As Eyes on EB continues to report, “Take Back Our Schools” maintains a narrow focus on replacing the board without getting sidetracked by political rhetoric. The upcoming Board of Education elections and the end-of-July petition deadline will be critical in determining the future direction of the East Brunswick Public School District. This lively group of fanatic bloggers will keep the community informed, engaged, and ready to participate in what may be a defining moment for local educational governance.
