Troubling Exclusion in East Brunswick Yearbook

By Adam Altman – Opinion

The Unsettling Yearbook Omission

With deep concern and disappointment, we address a troubling issue that has come to light at East Brunswick High School. The recent exclusion of the Jewish Student Union club from the yearbook, replaced by Muslim Student Association members, has raised significant questions and concerns within the community. This decision overlooks the Jewish Student Union and raises serious questions about the decision-making process and the values being promoted in our schools.

The response from Superintendent Victor Valeski needs to do more to address these concerns adequately. His statement reads:

Yearbook Error

We are aware of an error in the yearbook. We are working with the publisher to correct the yearbook. We are also investigating how the error occurred and will address that as appropriate after this investigation.

We deeply apologize for this error and the disappointment it has caused. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work expeditiously to rectify this situation.

While an apology has been issued and an investigation is promised, this response’s vague and seemingly indifferent nature is far from comforting. The community deserves more than just a brief acknowledgment of the error; we need transparency, accountability, and a clear plan of action to ensure that such an oversight does not occur again.

Holding the School Board Accountable

The school board and administration have a lot of explaining to do. This incident goes beyond a simple yearbook error; it touches on the inclusivity and respect that should be fundamental in our educational institutions. The decision to exclude the Jewish Student Union while including the Muslim Student Association requires thorough investigation and explanation. Was this an innocent mistake, or is a deeper issue at play?

The board must take this opportunity to reflect on its processes and policies. How does it ensure that all student groups are given equal recognition and representation? What measures are in place to prevent such oversights in the future? It is crucial that it address these questions head-on, providing clear and honest answers to the community.

A Pattern of Lack of Transparency

This incident is not an isolated case; there has been a recurring theme of a lack of transparency from the school board and Superintendent Valeski. Over the past few years, numerous decisions have been made without clear communication or adequate explanation to the community. This lack of openness erodes trust and fosters a sense of alienation among parents, students, and staff. Transparent governance is essential for building a supportive and engaged community, and the current opaque practices are detrimental to achieving this goal. Without accountability and clear communication, confidence in the school leadership continues to wane, impacting the overall effectiveness and morale within the educational environment.

The disappointment and hurt caused by this omission are significant. It is not just about a yearbook entry; it is about recognizing and respecting all student groups’ diverse identities and contributions. The school board and administration must take full responsibility for this oversight and work diligently to rebuild trust with the community.

Past Incidents of Bias and Downplayed Concerns

This current situation is exacerbated by a history of similar issues within the district. Several years ago, concerns were raised by a parent about how East Brunswick schools have been downplaying bias incidents, as reported in a Patch article. This pattern of underplaying serious issues and failing to address them transparently is deeply troubling. It highlights a systemic problem within the administration that goes beyond isolated incidents, pointing to a broader issue of neglect and a lack of accountability when it comes to dealing with discrimination and bias. This recurring behavior undermines the trust and safety that should be inherent in our educational institutions, making it imperative for the school board and administration to take decisive and transparent actions to restore faith in their leadership.

In conclusion, while we wait for the investigation’s results, the school board and administration must demonstrate genuine care and commitment to rectifying this situation. They must be held accountable for their actions and ensure that every student group is treated with the respect and recognition it deserves. We can move forward from this profoundly troubling incident through transparency, accountability, and a commitment to inclusivity.
