The East Brunswick Township Council held its June 22 meeting Monday night, recognizing a longtime township employee, reviewing a new Community Energy Master Plan, and approving several projects and resolutions.
Kevin O’Connor Honored for 37.5 Years of Service
The Council recognized Kevin O’Connor on his retirement after more than 37 years with East Brunswick’s Department of Recreation and Parks. Officials thanked him for his dedication and wished him well in retirement.
Community Energy Master Plan Presented
The meeting’s main presentation focused on East Brunswick’s new Community Energy Master Plan, funded through a $10,000 state grant.
Representatives from Blue Sky Power explained that the plan serves as a roadmap for future sustainability efforts rather than a mandate. The presentation outlined potential initiatives including expanding electric vehicle infrastructure, increasing energy efficiency, promoting solar energy, exploring community solar programs, and improving outreach about clean energy incentives.
During the discussion, township officials noted that East Brunswick is already ahead of many communities in implementing sustainable practices, including EV charging infrastructure and municipal solar projects, while emphasizing the plan provides additional opportunities for future improvements.
Council Opposes Proposed State Housing Legislation
Among the resolutions approved was one opposing New Jersey Senate Bill S-1836. Township officials argued that the proposal would weaken local control over land-use decisions by allowing certain developments to bypass the municipal planning process. The resolution urges state lawmakers to reject the legislation.
Other Business Approved
The Council also approved:
- Construction of new post-tension concrete pickleball courts at Community Park for up to $552,500.
- Purchase of two hybrid Ford Escape vehicles for the township fleet.
- Renewal of several liquor licenses.
- Grants supporting historic preservation and recycling projects.
- Approval for the Middlesex County Fair, Diwali Festival, and related fireworks permits.
